The most useful courage verses for children are short enough to remember under pressure. Joshua 1:9 (“be strong and of a good courage… for the LORD thy God is with thee”), Isaiah 41:10 (“fear thou not; for I am with thee”) and Psalm 56:3 (“what time I am afraid, I will trust in thee”) are the three worth teaching first, because a child can hold all three in their head and reach for one at the school gate. What the Bible means by courage
It is worth getting this right before handing verses to a child, because the usual version does damage. Nowhere does Scripture tell a frightened person that there is nothing to be afraid of. The fear is generally treated as reasonable.
What it says instead, almost every time, is I am with you. Joshua is told to be strong because God goes with him. Isaiah's “fear not” is followed immediately by “for I am with thee”. The courage is not a feeling the child has to manufacture; it is a fact about who is standing next to them.
That matters practically. “Don't be scared” asks a child to do something they cannot do on command, and they will conclude they have failed. “You are not on your own” is something they can believe while still being frightened, which is the only kind of courage anyone actually has.

How to actually teach one
- Pick one. Not ten. A child with one verse they truly own is far better off than a child who has met ten.
- Say it at a calm moment. Teaching a verse during a panic does not work. Teach it at bedtime on an ordinary night, and it will be there when it is needed.
- Give them the kid version first. “God comes with me everywhere” is the one they will remember at the school gate. The full wording can follow.
- Use it out loud, in the moment. In the car on the way to the thing, say it once, lightly, and do not make a ceremony of it.
- Let it be theirs. A verse a child chooses beats a verse you assign, every time.
When to use which
