Bedtime Prayers When Your Child Has Done Wrong

By the Tiny Psalms team · Updated September 2026

When a child goes to bed ashamed of something they did, the prayer should be short, should name the thing once without re-litigating it, and should end with them forgiven rather than warned. Say sorry to God, hear plainly that God forgives properly and does not keep bringing it up, and stop. Do not use the bedtime prayer to extract a better apology or to add a final lesson — a prayer used as the last stage of a telling-off teaches a child that God is the person you meet at the end of being in trouble.

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”1 John 1:9 (KJV)

The mistake almost everyone makes

It has been a bad evening. Something was broken, or a sibling was hurt, or there was a lie. The telling-off happened, it was justified, and now it is bedtime and the child is small and quiet under the duvet.

The temptation is to use the prayer to finish the job — one more mention, so it really lands. Almost every parent has done it. It is the single most reliable way to teach a child that prayer is where you go to be told off again by someone bigger than your parents.

The alternative is not pretending nothing happened. It is letting the prayer do the one thing the telling-off could not: end it.

Prayers to say sorry

Preschoolers · ages 3–5

Dear Jesus, I did something wrong today. I am sorry. Thank You that You still love me exactly the same. Help me sleep. Amen.

School-age · ages 6–12

Jesus, I did something today I am not proud of. You saw it, and I am not going to pretend about it. I am sorry. Thank You that You forgive properly and do not keep bringing it up. Help me put it right tomorrow, and help me sleep tonight. Amen.

When they cannot say it yet

God, she has had a hard evening and she is not ready to talk about it. You know the whole of it. Thank You that You are not cross with her. Give her sleep, and give us both a better tomorrow. Amen.

Pray this one over them, out loud, without asking them to join in. A child who will not say sorry at 8pm very often will at 8am.

When your child has been wronged instead

God, someone was unkind to [name] today and it still hurts. You saw that too. Help her not to carry it all night, and help her be kind tomorrow even if they are not. Amen.

Four rules for this particular prayer

The picture of God underneath

What a child learns in this particular moment lasts an unreasonably long time. A prayer said after a bad evening is quietly answering the question: what is God like when I have been awful?

The answer Scripture gives is startlingly warm — the father in Luke 15 sees his son “when he was yet a great way off” and runs. That is the tone to aim for, and the lost sheep is the story to read on exactly this kind of night: the shepherd goes out, finds the one, and carries it home without a word of telling-off.

For ordinary nights, the short prayers by age are here for preschoolers and school-age children.

A story made just for your child tonight

Forgiveness is one of the eight things you can ask Tiny Psalms for. Tell it what kind of evening it has been and it writes a gentle story around your child by name — never shaming, always ending kindly — with a whispered prayer and three real Bible promises. Your first story is free.

Frequently asked questions

How do I pray with my child after they have been in trouble?

Keep it short, name the thing once without going back over it, say the forgiveness out loud, and stop. Leave consequences and repairs for the morning — the bedtime prayer's job is to end the day, not extend the telling-off.

What is a simple prayer of sorry for a child?

“Dear Jesus, I did something wrong today. I am sorry. Thank You that You still love me exactly the same. Help me sleep. Amen.” For a preschooler that is the entire prayer.

What if my child refuses to say sorry at bedtime?

Pray it over them instead, without requiring them to join in, and let the apology happen in the morning. Forcing a sorry at bedtime produces a performance rather than a change of heart, and it makes the prayer the thing they resist.

What Bible verse about forgiveness is good for children?

1 John 1:9 — if we confess, God forgives and cleanses. For younger children, the parable of the lost sheep in Luke 15 says the same thing in a form they can picture.
